Word Style Sheets
I am a huge fan of style sheets - I wish I had used them when I started my thesis to keep my documents in order...

Everytime you want the text to *look* different, be bold, or a
HEADING in 16pt, a style sheet is a lifesaver!

You tell your text it is going to be a HEADING or a table legend, rather than just alter the text. The formatting is preset and every time you want to use the style, it's already in place. It makes table of contents, figures, tables and appendices easy.

Paste any existing text you have into your doc using edit...paste special...unformatted text. Then you don't import any other weird formats which can spoil your presentation.

This template gives you an outline in Word and talks though how to use stylesheets.
